Treasuremytext: cloud based SMS storage for Android. V2.

We’ve been busy working in our Android app version 2 and it’s now live and a whole lot more fully featured than version 1. The Treasuremytext for Android application automatically archives all sent and received messages from your Android phone to the Treasuremytext web app. Once you set it up, you don’t need to do anything; all your new incoming and outgoing messages are archived automatically. Many Android users have been fans of the Treasuremytext app but have asked for a few new features. Here they are:

  • Simple one Touch setup
  • Saves sent and received SMS automatically
  • Contact filters let you save only the SMS you need
  • Backup, Organise, Print, Email (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo etc) your SMS via Treasuremytext.com
  • Twitter Integeration

To install, search for Treasuremytext in the Android Market. For more info visit Treasuremytext.com or see info about the app on Cyrket here.

Create a DIY SMS Gateway with Android + Treasuremytext

Chicago based artist Leon Grant Bussinger’s been busy creating Light Sound & Motion “previewing several current design and technology projects including multi-touch, large scale sms interaction, and experiential lighting design.”

Leon wanted to a simple solution that would enable him to create an interactive SMS project. Treasuremytext for Android to the rescue!

Essentially Treasuremytext for Android auto archives all messages received on an Android (G1) handset. All messages get archived in a user’s private SMS account. We created a little tweak just for Leon that let him publish a text stream of all of these received messages. Leon then displayed the text stream in his artwork - essentially allowing his friends to speak voice messages which are then displayed on screen.

Essentially Treasuremytext for Android acts as an automatic SMS gateway - which we think is pretty neat!

Leon’s work involved inviting his audience to leave him voice messages (Google Voice), which automatically get turned to text, then sent to the web via the Treasuremytext Android app. Pretty nice hack!

Timetravel on Treasuremytext

tmt_timechange.png

Setting the date of messages is now possible on Treasuremytext (we’ve just added the ability for you to change the timestamp and reset the time and date on your messages). So instead of displaying when you saved a message you can change it to display when you received a message.

This is a long awaited feature for many of our users who like to build up an accurate archive of their texting activities. So those archived messages announcing a birth, wishing you a happy valentine’s or a happy new year - can now all be set to the right date and time!

Sneakpeek / Setting the original date of your SMS

Probably the most requested feature is the ability to save the original date of your SMS. It’s impossible for us to do from the forwarded SMS so instead people have been diligently using sticky notes and even appending the original date and time to the messages saved. We’re wondering if this is people doing it themselves or if there are actually some phones out there that are doing this for them

So implementing a feature to allow people to change the date has been on the todo list for a while and it’s finally coming into existence. Here’s a sneak peak of whats coming. The UI comes from the JQuery datepicker extended with a timepicker with a few special modifications.

Are they ignoring me, know for sure with delivery reciepts.

SMS Delivery StatusIt bothers me when sending someone an SMS when I’m expecting a reply when I don’t get one.

My natural predispostion is to imagine something has gone wrong with the SMS being delivered rather than just imagining that my message wasn’t the most important thing to someone at that particular moment in time. This problem is doubly excerbated when using the Web to send an SMS because it adds to your irrational thinkings, ‘Maybe the Website didn’t send it’. We know you think this from the number of people we see sending SMS to themselves the first time they try it from Treasuremytext - there’s something about a Website sending SMS that people don’t quite believe is true.

With this in mind the new TMT introduced support for SMS delivery reciepts, something that wasn’t there in the old site. This was broken after launch but as of yesterday was back again and it’s pretty cool.

Built into SMS technology is a notification system which immediatly tells the phone or gateway of the sender the status of the SMS sent which is updated again when an SMS has been delivered or it’s given up trying. It’s probably even supported on your phone, buried deep in a menu somewhere. The ability to check the delivery status of a message, I think the venerable Nokia 3310 was able to do this. Treasuremytext also does this, it’s not quite buried deep in a menu but it may be just as unnoticed unless you look for it.

So if you want to be sure someone is getting your SMS you can feel a bit more reassured if you send it from Treasuremytext. Aswell as delivery status notifications it’s also much easier to type on a keyboard, did we mention it comes from your own number so people can reply straight back, and it’s just 0.05 euro cents anywhere in the world, payable by PayPal, what a bargain, you really should check it out!

So if you’re using our outbound sms check out your Sent folder and take a look at the delivery status of any of your sent messages. In there each message is displayed with either a green, yellow or red light. Green = Your SMS has been delivered, Yellow = It’s enroute and it’s delayed either because of the network or more normally because the persons phone is off and finally Red = It can’t be delivered (normally because the number isn’t the full international number).

If you catch it quick enough between going from Yellow to Green after sending it you might even see it change in front of your eyes and it making a cute little sound to tell you it’s been delivered.

Update your status on your Wordpress Blog by SMS

kerim_blog_update2.png

Kerim Satirli just suggested a great idea for adding status updates to a Wordpress blog using Treasuremytext and the KB Advanced RSS Widget.

Why would you want to do this?

  • Because sometimes a SMS is easier than writing a whole blog post!
  • Because you want to update on the move!
  • Because you’re a very very social person!

It’s better than….
As Kerim points out people can also use Twitter or Pownce to do this but for some of us in Europe, sending an SMS to Treasuremytext’s Dutch or UK number is cheaper than texting other service (or potentially free depending on your network / plan).

How it works

  • Download this great Wordpress plugin
  • Upload to your Wordpress plugins directory
  • Enable and configure
  • Start texting!

Thanks Kerim, and more ‘Treasuremytext extensibility ideas’ coming soon.

Treasuremytext to launch free service (and to create “client applications”)

free_treasuremytext.jpg

Following a review of what our customers are telling us and prior to launching our new Treasuremytext 2 service, we’re announcing a new pricing structure and revenue model.

Treasuremytext is going to be free. $0.00. EUR 0-. £0.00. Zero! This follows previous announcements that we will operate the service under a ‘Freemium model’ with free limited accounts and paid unlimited accounts.  So why the change of heart and how will Treasuremytext make money?

We know from experience that people will pay a premium for an unlimited account at Treasuremytext but we see this cost represents a barrier to some users who would otherwise happily use the service for free. Furthermore the trials of our beta “Treasuremytext for iPhone” application have been very successful indeed; far surpassing expectations of take up amongst international iPhone users.

Treasuremytext therefore will offer a free service to those users globally who ‘treasure their texts’ by sending them to the service via SMS (the user pays their network operator the cost of the SMS). In addition we will develop client applications (for example the Treasuremytext for iPhone) which we will charge for. Apple’s recent release of the iPhone SDK will enable a marketplace for applications for iPhone.  In addition to a premium edition of Treasuremytext for iPhone, we may work in partnership with developers to create clients for other devices, (for example for S60 phones). The handset application marketplace is growing and having tested the marketplace with our beta Treasuremytext for iPhone application we are confident that a Treasuremytext for *other devices* will be a success. Having carried out significant work on our Treasuremytext API, we are already part way there to launching a suite of apps. Exact plans for the API and subsequent partnerships will be announced soon.

In addition to client applications, we are also exploring plans to enable third party use of the Treasuremytext platform and ways in which we can integrate with value add services enabling users to do more with their SMS; for example, but not limited to: on demand printing of SMS  / Text Books, or t-shirts from the application.

Treasuremytext 2 will come out of invite only beta soon (March 2008).

SMS Stickies: Why people like annotating their SMS

sticky_sms.png

SMS messages you receive from friends can be hugely important: they’re personal memories; important, emotive, poignant. They’re so important that people want to keep them AND to annotate them, so to make this possible we have added ’stickies’ (or comments) to Treasuremytext 2.

So now when you’re organizing your SMS messages you can add a sticky note to one. As we’re about to launch Treasuremytext 2 and come out of invite-only-beta we realised that we were missing this as a key feature. The old version of the application has seen thousands of our users adding their own comments. to individual messages. So why do people want to annotate their SMS messages?

Here’s our top 5 reasons…

It reminds me of…

Some people, as well as wanting to save their messages, also want to write the memory around the text message, for example what they were doing when they received it, or what it ‘really’ means.

Changing the date…
You may receive a message on a Monday and archive it on Treasuremytext on a Wednesday - and then go back to change the date with a Sticky ‘this was really sent on my birthday’ for example. In a future update we’ll enable date editing too.

Feeling more organised…
Whilst we offer Treasuremytext users the ability to organise messages into folders, some of our users also like adding their own longer notes that help them organise things. Some use Stickies like tags: ’sally, liverpool, nightout, sexy’ for example.

Adding context…
Perhaps in case you might forget the context later on. Some SMS are incredibly short but still remind you of something or need saving because they make you laugh. The image above is a perfect example of this.

Commenting on your own messages….
Yes, some people even go so far as commenting on their own messages. “This one’s hilarious” and so on.

It seems SMS storage space is still an issue for sidekick users!

From the T-Mobile site:

“What Does the Error Message ‘Your SIM Card Is Full’ Mean? (SideKick®)
You will receive a Your SIM card is full message when you have reached your 30 phone messages limit. To resolve the issue, delete some phone messages.”

And of course there are other reasons why you might want to Treasure Your Texts!
