Taking the “Invite Only” sign down

createmyaccount.png

Treasuremytext 2.0 is now officially open for business. We’re open, and the ‘invite only’ signs have been taken down. No longer in private beta means we’ve got real life people treasuring their texts and playing with the new features. Yay!

We’re still being relatively quiet about telling the masses just yet, but we’re really  happy that anyone who wants a free unlimited treasuremytext account can now have one. If you haven’t got one yet, get one here.

Treasuremytext at “Over the Air”

overtheair1.png

We’re planning to attend Over the Air, (48 hours of mobile development), London, April 4th. The event “brings together developers, designers, hackers and entrepreneurs to explorer the potential exciting future of wireless and mobile devices/applications“.  Neat!

We’re hoping to learn stuff, to share our knowledge of working ‘near’ mobile, and to meet some mobile developers, specifically with iPhone or S60 skills.

Looks set to be a great event, and… it’s free.

Talking startups, and other things at Barcamp Manchester today

barcamp_generic_3.jpg

I’m at Barcamp Manchester (UK) today. It seems like a great event for meeting old friends, new 2.0 people in the north west and other new acquaintances. (By the way Mary and Adam - you’re late!) I’m also hoping to meet up with Imran Ali from Mobile Messaging 2.0 for a chat.

I’m writing this from a session on microformats - so far, all very cool. I may do a session later on about our experiences of bootstrapping Treasuremytext - 10 15 mistakes and things to learn for wanna be web entrepreneurs?

New stuff in New York

inlikewithyou.jpg

The Treasuremytext team is in New York this week and we thought we’d share a few pictures of our travels on Flickr here. Last night we went to the New York Tech Meetup - and heard about several New York based startups. Some of it was pretty cool. I liked the ‘I’m in like with you‘ site who are pioneering social entertainment. The annotating video is a lot of fun - although the annotations can be a little predictable. Still - I’m in ‘like with’ the service.

We also heard from NY based mobile startup http://www.gomobo.com/ who have a mobile approach to jumping the queues at your favorite restaurant.

We also met up with a couple of potential new partners with whom we’ll be exploring ideas for taking Treasuremytext to new markets. Watch this space!

Sexy SMS @ Ignite @ Web2.0 Expo Berlin

1886013199_f3386ae6f2.jpg

Yesterday I presented a quick presentation on “Sexy SMS” as part of ‘Ignite‘ at Web2expo Berlin. We were excited enough at the thought of presenting to the expo crowd in a bar after the keynote by Tim O’Reilly, but a change of location meant that Ignite took place directly following Tim’s keynote in the main venue!  Pretty neat!

I wanted to share what we had learnt about SMS - how and what people really send by SMS, why it is a sexy technology in terms of the nature of a lot of our ‘treasured texts’ but also in terms of its ever increasing popularity.

The Mobile Data Association announced yesterday that: “Over one billion text messages are sent every week in the UK, with September 2007 reaching an average of over 1.2 billion messages every week, the same number of messages sent during the whole of 1999.” From: 160 Characters.

Indeed 1.2 million messages were sent in the UK during the course of my 5 minute presentation.  So my presentation of SMS messages sent to treasuremytext highlighted trends in what and how people send by SMS - I presented a range of messages, and I think the audience liked it; there were at least a few giggles in the audience.

The presentation is on slideshare here: http://www.slideshare.net/katielips/sexy-sms

The PICNIC’07 SMS Shoutbox

picnic_website.jpg

The PICNIC ‘07 SMS Shoutbox (powered by Treasuremytext2) is now live.

Got something to say - say it by SMS!
PICNIC is an inspirational event, so much to see and do, lots to make you think. Have your say via SMS when you’re at any PICNIC event. You can even have your say if you’re not there!

Shout it to the room!
PICNIC (and the site developers Mediamatic) have created a shoutbox specific to each room or venue. To SMS your thoughts to the room, you need to add the room code before your message. When an event’s on in a certain venue, and you use that code at the beginning of your message, your SMS will appear on the shoutbox for that room.

Who’s saying what?

You’ll be able to see the shoutbox on the picnicnetwork.org website. You’ll see all the messages sent by SMS and also by the mobile app created by PICNIC, or what people have added via the website.

How do we know it’s you?
So we know it’s you, and so your picture appears by your message, you need to add your international mobile phone number to your profile on picnicnetwork.org. Login, edit your profile and add your mobile number.

For example +31666666666 (sample Dutch number) or +1222222222 (sample US number).

How does it work?
Send your message to: +31621224580
Add the room code at the beginning of your message.

Try it now!
Each event has a unique room code. Check the event itself for details.
Or try it now by SMSing the conference, or the whole PICNIC event

To send a message to the conference: Start your message with BA
See the conference shoutbox here.

To send a message to the PICNIC event: Start your message with IZ
See the PICNIC shoutbox here.

See all the SMS shoutbox messages to all rooms (on the Treasuremytext2 beta) here.

Some small print
Our number +31621224580 is a regular Dutch mobile number.
You won’t get a reply, or any premium rate SMS or anything like that.
It costs the standard rate of sending a SMS to any regular Dutch mobile / cellphone.
If you haven’t added your mobile number to your PICNIC profile on picnicnetwork.org your name won’t be shown, but your phone number will be.
